The Duran Wrestling Team did very well at the State Wrestling Tournament despite not having everyone make weight. We originally had 22 wrestlers that were ready to wrestle on Saturday. Then after the weigh-ins we had three wrestlers that didn’t make weight. This was very damaging to our team scores roster and totals. Also we had two of our elite wrestlers drop out due to illness, and we totally understand when health is at risk. So despite being sick and not making weight Duran finished in 10th place as a team. Not bad at all. We are very proud of everyone that attend the State Tournament.
Results—Aston littrell— 3rd place— Ashton earned a chance to wrestle for second place after a first round loss, which is very hard to do in any tournament let alone a state tournament.
— Rudy Barajas— 4th place— Rudy did very well and wrestled very hard. He had to earn his medal as he wrestled the best kids Colorado had to offer.
—Dylan Kolb— 3rd place—- Dylan had to wrestle the best kids he has ever faced to date. He did very well.
—Steven Apodaca—3rd place— Steven wrestled great as he always does. He lost one match in the semi finals and that was his only loss on the day.
—Tyson Duran — 3rd place— Tyson was the first of three Duran wrestlers that would have the opportunity to become a state champion. Tyson dominate the first three matches of the day, he then would prepare for the biggest match of his life. He wrestled the best that we have ever seen him wrestle, however his efforts fell short as he allowed a reversal followed by a short two point near fall to lose his match. He then had to wrestle back ending the day with a third place.
—Charles Harris Faithful—2nd place— Charles displayed true heart and courage in his efforts to become the Colorado State Champion. In his second match he was down before he pinned his opponent. We are very excited for Charles. He was the second Duran to wrestle a state championship.
—Matthew Apodaca—4th place— Matthew once again had to work hard to get a medal. He lost in his second match of the day, which makes for a long day of wrestling in a big bracket. He would then pin his next three opponents including last week’s state placers, and a wrestler that pinned him less than a month ago. Then in the third place match he would lose a overtime thriller leaving the tournament with a fourth place.
—Joe Garza— 2nd place— Joe was on his game. He beat one of the most elite wrestlers that this sport has to offer. Joe was the only Duran wrestler to be ahead in the state championship match. He was winning 5-2 with 40 seconds left. We could taste victory as he took a great shot lifting his opponent close to the out of bounds. A short mistake later and we were fighting off our backs. It was heart breaking to watch Joe lose when he worked so hard to achieve his goal. We are so proud of him and all his efforts.
Hey David, i know its gotta be hard to be the “Bad Guy”…Meaning being super tough at practice.Coaching a wrestler for these events is like training soldiers for war. Simple as that. If You slack up on your training techniques..They feel the pain/loss when they wrestle a stud whose Coach IS pushing him to extreme conditioning. I think your focused on building Champions. Keep up the good work.
Im gonna try and get Little Rudy to Loveland..I cant garantee anything..I will try. -Rudy Barajas
